Report by David Power

Rathfarnham WSAF AC has a proud & successful history in this classic mountain relay race, finishing on the podium every year in recent memory. Having lost the title to TT Racers (Trinity Track) last year, the team were keen to challenge in what was a competitive and exciting race with 34 teams. Rathfarnham finished 3rd overall, behind TT Racer who comfortably won, followed by an impressive Crusaders AC team.

Rathfarnham held the podium by only 40 seconds, after over 7h49m of racing over 100km from Kilmacshogue to Shillelagh. Eight runners made up the team. Well done to Peter O'Farrell, Paul Fleming, Vanessa Sallier, Ronan Kearns, Jason Reid, Louis McCarthy, David Power and debutant Una O'Brien.

The race had lots of twists and turns - it's a battle getting 8 fit people to the start line, with late minute changes up the day before the race. On the day, there's the logistics of getting everyone in position and hand over times. Then there's the risk of taking a wrong turn - which affected all of the top 3 teams. Nothing is definite until the finish line. It was an exciting finish, with Una holding off ex-Olympian Linda Byrne on leg 8.

Other Rathfarnham members competing included Greg Byrne & Mike Long (UCD Orienteering).

Thanks to Rene & Jason, race directors, plus all the marshals & volunteers.
